Norwegian Seafood Export Council

Every day, throughout the year, 27 million meals of Norwegian Seafood are served worldwide. The task of the Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC) is to tell people in all corners of the world that the best seafood comes from Norway.

Norway is blessed with unique natural resources. In fact, Norway’s waters, climate and it’s very geography seem designed to raise seafood. No wonder that the most common association to Norway among foreigners is seafood.

Norway exports seafood to around 150 different countries, and is the world's largest joint marketer of seafood. Every year, the Norwegian Seafood Export Council carries out several hundred activities in more than 20 different markets, and its entire efforts are financed by the Norwegian seafood industry itself.

The Norwegian Seafood Export Council has its headquarters in Tromsø, employs representatives in China, Japan, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Singapore and Brazil. NSEC promotes campaigns in stores and restaurants, advertises in local media, carries out information activities for consumers and commerce, and media work in a number of countries.

NSEC was created by the Ministry of Fisheries in 1991, and is a limited company, in which all of the shares are owned by the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs. The main organisations in the industry make recommendations for appointments to the Board of the company. Its activities include marketing and PR, market information, market access, information and contingency.

It is important that the Norwegian fishing industry enjoys at least as good competitive conditions and access to central markets as its competitors. The NSEC is the central source of information for the industry concerning import quotas, customs duty and commercial conditions in various markets. The NSEC advises the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs in all market-related questions.

NSEC publishes statistics for Norwegian fish export on a weekly basis. One of its central tasks is to gather, systemise and analyse Norwegian and international commercial statistics for seafood.

NSEC carries out global analyses of resource and competition situations for seafood. Ongoing market monitoring is published in reports that are provided to the industry as well as in a weekly newsletter.

It is important to maintain Norwegian Seafood’s positive reputation, and high priority is placed on contingency and communication in crises. The NSEC website – www.seafoodfromnorway.com makes the information more easily available for everyone and is available in 12 different languages.

NSEC carries out an active information programme, with focussed media initiatives. Press grants, tours and PR activities contribute to increasing the awareness of Norwegian Seafood.
